Mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories

چکیده

Abstract Purpose The assessment of potential environmental impacts associated to mineral resource use in LCA is a highly debated topic. Most current impact methods consider the extraction resources as issue concern, while their dissipation an emerging concept. This article proposes approach account for life cycle inventories (LCIs), with application case study. Methods definition first discussed considering both main practice and context dissipation. Secondly, described: short-term perspective (25 years), any flow (i) environment, (ii) final waste disposal facilities, (iii) products-in-use technosphere, not providing significant function anymore (including due non-functional recycling), suggested be reported dissipative at level unit processes. requires map flows into out processes under study (“resource analysis”), before identifying reporting them LCI datasets. Results discussion applied analyze direct along primary production copper, using Ecoinvent (v3.5) 1 kg copper cathode generates 0.88 (primarily calcium carbonate, lower extent iron), important contributions “tailings disposal,” “pyrometallurgy,” “mining concentration.” Moreover, this discusses how developed would change interpretation results regarding LCA, far some key methodological aspects (e.g., temporal perspective) can affect inventory long-term implies shift flows), finally new data requirements, terms availability adequacy. Conclusions As demonstrated study, existing datasets supporting documentation contain least part information required consistently compile process level, yet need complementary assessments. may particularly relevant better support development more resource-efficient techniques or product designs. It still open adapt characterization approaches induced by these flows.

Integration of Life Cycle Inventories Incorporating Manufacturing Unit Processes

Sustainable manufacturing (SM) concerns the manufacture of products with regard to environmental, social, and economic impacts over the entire life cycle. With a primary focus on environmental concerns, life cycle assessment (LCA) can support SM practices. The life cycle inventory (LCI) is a key phase of LCA, and this paper considers the integration of manufacturing unit processes (MUPs) into s...

Quantifying variability in life cycle greenhouse gas inventories of alternative middle distillate transportation fuels.

The presence of variability in life cycle analysis (LCA) is inherent due to both inexact LCA procedures and variation of numerical inputs. Variability in LCA needs to be clearly distinguished from uncertainty. This paper uses specific examples from the production of diesel and jet fuels from 14 different feedstocks to demonstrate general trends in the types and magnitudes of variability present...

Modeling Inventories Over The Business Cycle

We search for useful models of aggregate fluctuations with inventories. We focus exclusively on dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models that endogenously give rise to inventory investment and evaluate two leading candidates: the (S,s) model and the stockout avoidance model. Each model is examined under both technology shocks and preference shocks, and its performance gauged by its ability...

Inventories and the Business Cycle: An Overview

Investment in business inventories has averaged roughly one-half of 1 percent of real GDP in the United States over the post–World War II period. Given its relatively minor role as a component of output, it might seem curious that inventory investment has traditionally drawn a great deal of interest from macroeconomists and policymakers. One reason is that although the level of inventory invest...

A demand-centered, hybrid life-cycle methodology for city-scale greenhouse gas inventories.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting for individual cities is confounded by spatial scale and boundary effects that impact the allocation of regional material and energy flows. This paper develops a demand-centered, hybrid life-cycle-based methodology for conducting city-scale GHG inventories that incorporates (1) spatial allocation of surface and airline travel across colocated cities in larger met...
